Chapter Thirteen – Patrick

“Dinner,” Killian said as they drove away from Honeysuckle Cottage. “That sounds promising.”

“It does,” Patrick agreed. “I was worried when Harry appeared. I think he has a thing for Kelly.”

“Now that would have made life interesting.” Killian glanced at his worried friend. “I’d never met him before, but I’ve spoken to Eliza about him. He has a certain smugness about him. Eliza said he thinks he’s better than most people in town since his family has owned the cottages for generations and the sawmill before they had to sell it.”

“I bet he can trace his ancestry back to the people who founded Bear Creek.” Patrick rolled his eyes. “As if that makes you a better person.”

“Well, I don’t think you have to worry about people like Harry. Kelly invited you to dinner. Not her landlord.” Killian chuckled as Patrick cracked a wide smile.

“I don’t think I could be happier.” He sighed in content.

“So that’s it, two happy bears, we’re halfway to making the name of the bar genuine.” Killian sat back in his seat and leaned his elbow on the rolled-down window.

“How about you?” Patrick asked. “How are you doing?”

Killian nodded. “I’m happy for you and Gunner. So I guess I’m halfway to happy.”

“That’s a start.” Patrick fell silent. He had a taste of what Gunner said he felt when he found his mate and the others didn’t. Guilt. This little worm of an idea that your friends deserve happiness more than you. He also recalled telling Gunner that wasn’t true. He’d never have wanted to rob Gunner of his happiness for his own sake and Jason and Killian had said the same. That wouldn’t have changed.

“Okay. So we take the stuff over to the farm. It’s halfway to Bear Bluff,” Killian said.

“And since we’re halfway to Bear Bluff...” Patrick nodded. “I’m sure Sadie and Gunner would like a visit.”

“Well, they’re going to get one whether they like it or not.” Killian laughed. “They are not going to get rid of us that easily.”

“I don’t think they’ll ever want to get rid of us. Most new parents struggle to find babysitters, we’re gonna be fighting for the chance.” Patrick laughed along with his friend. “This truly has been a great day.”

“And all because of a storm.” Killian looked to the distance where gray clouds raced across the sky. “Let’s hope the next belt of rain clouds go around us.”

Patrick’s mood sobered. “We’ll make sure there are no lives lost. We can protect most properties and their contents, but we can’t work miracles.”

“Wise words.” Killian fell silent as Patrick’s words touched a raw nerve. Despite being Patrick’s best friend, Killian had never opened up completely about his reasons for coming to Bear Creek and joining the Silverback Saviors. Patrick never pushed him for details. It was an unwritten rule between the men. But there were times when Killian’s pain and self-loathing simmered below the surface when Patrick wished he knew everything so he could go some way to helping his friend heal the festering wound he kept covered with teasing words and quick retorts.
